The Weekly Lake County Music Guide

By Mike Guarniero

But first, there's some music happening this week, so pay attention...

On Thursdayevening, The Saw Shop Public House in Kelseyville will feature the Rockin' Blues of The Hip Replacements outside on the curb. There's always something new and interesting in the SSPH's menu and the music if the Hip Reps will provide the perfect background for your dining enjoyment. When you call to make reservations, (highly suggested...), you can ask what times the music is happenin'.

On Friday, Saturdayand Sunday the Gypsy tunings of Carlos Garay will be playing out on the deck at The Greenview Restaurant in HVL. Chef Matt has one of the best menus in the county so it’s the perfect double bill. The music is happenin’ Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 5 to 8:00. Enjoy Carlos and mangia bene…

I’ve heard rumors that this weekend might be the last time to see Tommy Roxat Richmond Park this year. I enjoyed many a Sunday enjoying many a Pliny while rockin’ to the rockin’ music of Tommy Rox. If I’m correct, he’ll be playing Friday from 5 to 8:00 and Saturday from 2 to 5:00. If I’m incorrect, I’m sure someone will let me know…

What I do know is that on Sunday the Fargo Bros will be Rockin’ the Park from 2 to 6:00. Whatta way to wrap up your weekend…

The lineup for the Blue Wing Saloon in Upper Lake outdoors this weekend starts on Friday with Majide playing Torch Songs and Old Standards from 5:30 to 8:00, Saturday it’s David Neft tinklin’ the ivories from 5:30 to 8:00, Sunday brunch presents the good music of the Good Measure Quintet from 10:30 to 2:00, Sunday Supper welcomes Frank VanMeter (with Majide?...) from 5:30 to 8:00 and their Monday Blueswill feature the hot and swampy Americana, Blues and Rock music of Hot Roux.

With limited seating it’s always a good idea to make reservations for any and all of these events…

On Saturday morning the Farmer’s Finest Farmers Market at Steele Winery in Finley will feature the harvest of many of our local LC farmers along with the music of Clearlake Rotary from 8:30AM to noon. Stock up on your favorite fresh and organic fruit and vegetables and enjoy some tunes.

On Saturdayevening the Riviera Hills Lounge in the Riviarea proud to present those wild and whacky, fun rockin’ and exceptionally entertaining Fargo Brosoutside on the deck from 5 to 9:00. Best to make reservations, Folks…

All of these events and their respective venues are complying with the social distancing and mask wearing rules set down by the County. Please comply as well. Thank you.

Today's the first day of Autumn. And where did the Summer go? I'll summarize, (no pun intended...) my thoughts with a song that most certainly encapsulates everything that went wrong between June 20th and September 22nd…

By Mike Guarniero

Hey, maybe they’ll name a beer after us… On Sundaythe Johnny Young Band is back in town and playing the Brewery from 3 to 6:00. Come on down, set a spell, do some Two-Steppin’, enjoy a brew. Friday at the Smiling Dogs Tasting Room in Kelseyville you’ll find the Jeff Castille Band performing from 6:30 to 9:30. SOAPBOX ALERT! I consider myself to be somewhat of an ambassador for live music here in Lake County. I play music, I observe musicians and bands and I always try to promote both them and the venues that provide that live music. I’ll even promote the bands and venues I don’t particularly like, because that’s what’s best for our overall music scene. But as an “ambassador” I take personal umbrage when certain individuals decide to lead some crusade against a particular venue, or the owner, or the manager. These petty grievances only serve to hurt a local live music scene that’s fragile enough without these misguided efforts exacerbating the by-products of their complaints. Those of us who enjoy the benefits of our healthy music scene should also be ambassadors, promoting - not deriding. ‘Nuff said about that… So, if and when you go out this weekend to support our local music scene, have fun – but please be safe.

Oh yeah, don’t forget to get out and vote on Tuesday…

The Weekly Lake County Music Guide

By Mike Guarniero

Today is Fat Tuesday, or as it is known in different countries, Pancake Day, Paczki Day, Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras, and finally, the Tuesday of Carnival – all of which are 47 days before Easter Sunday. The religious connection has you eating up all meats plus any other foods that comes from animals, like eggs and cream, along with certain libations restricted during the Lenten Season that commences the following day, Ash Wednesday. Of course, Fat Tuesday has since evolved, (some would prefer “de-evolved…), into a month of hedonism and debauchery, (or just about any other inappropriate behavior), to end at the stroke of midnight of said Tuesday. I tend to go along with the latter, I mean, rich pastries and fatty meats can be over-rated – so just give me a Hurricane and then show us your, um… well, you get the point… Meanwhile, back in The LC there’s gonna be all kinds of live music to cleanse our souls. Here’s the live music guide for the week of 2/25 through 3/3…

Tuesday at the Blue Wing Saloon in Upper Lake there’s going to be a special Mardi Gras Supper featuring the music of David Neft from 6 to 8:00. Beads and ceramic costume masks are optional. Reservations are strongly recommended...

The Moose Lodge in Clearlake Oaks on Wednesdaywill feature the music of 20 Feet of Shade

from 5 to 7:00. It’s also Wimpy Burger Wednesday. While I rave about these burgers, many of my friends have become converts. Wimpy Burgers and Shade, and it’s just Wednesday…

Thursday at the Catfish Coffee House in Clearlake, Chris Grant will be hosting another Open Mic event starting at 7:00. This is a comfortable atmosphere with free coffee, (not made from catfishes…) appreciative audiences and all musicians are invited.

The D-Bag, (Drinx in Lakeport) will have another “Folk Y’all” event on Thursday featuring none other than Cowboy Johnson and Chris Rovetti. Man, can these boys play! Go check ‘em out for yourselves from 8 to 10:00.

The Smiling Dogs Tasting Room in Kelseyville on Fridayare happy to bring back acoustic guitar savants Austin and Owens from 6:30 to 9:30. Contrary to popular beliefs, I don’t have a “man crush” on these guys, I’m just totally in awe of what they can do on guitar. Enjoy some award winning wines, then experience the greatness… On Saturday afternoon Rural Jazz Conspiracy will be showing the masses why Jazz isn’t just for wine snobs and wussies from 2 to 5:00. Come on out and join in the conspiracy. It’ll set you free…

This might be a typo because O’Meara Bros Brewing Cousually has music on Saturday, but they have The Brannigans listed for Friday. Solution: go both nights and enjoy lots of the O’Bros fine handcrafted beers and ales, (I like the Blond…).

On Friday night The Kentucky Jugglers will be tearing it up at The Pub in Ukiah from 9 to midnight. Still one of my favorite Lake County bands, it’s always a party in the making when the K’Juggs take the stage.

Saturday at Chacewater Winery and Olive Mill in Kelseyville, they’ll be presenting “Hot Havana Nights” featuring the Latin rhythms of The Carlos Herrera Cuban Band. Enjoy an evening of sampling CWOM’s excellent local wines paired with Cuban delectables, (and Cuban cigars?...), from 5:30 to 9:00. Cost is $45.

The Fore Family Tasting Room in Kelseyville along with the Unitarian Universalist Community of Lake County on Saturdaywill host another in their Coffee House Concerts Series featuring the music of Joshua Davis and Alice Howe from 7 to 9:30. Some might remember Joshua from “The Voice”. Cost is $25.

Spend Leap Night, (it’s Leap Year, after all…) at The Riviera Hills Lounge up in the Riviarea where The Fargo Bros Band will make their once every four years appearance on Saturday night from 7 to 11:00. (okay, they play more than once every four years – go see ‘em anyways…).

Robinsons Rancheria Lounge in Nice will present Flat Busted on Friday night from 9 to 1:00. A friend was just asking where one can find Country Music in Lake County and, well, here it is. Lots of vids on Youtube… On Saturday the Blackhorse Blues Band are back at the Lounge. Check out their videos, then check ‘em out. They’re pretty good…

Twin Pine Casino in Middletown will have on Friday and Saturday nights The Sons of Rock & Roll. I can’t for the life of me find any info on this band, which must mean they’re America’s best kept secret. Go check them out, then let me know…

Sunday at McCarty’s Bar in Redwood Valley there will be the 12th Annual Bobby Keys Musicians Memorial Jam Session starting at 11:30 AM. Bobby Keys was a local Redwood Valley musician and friend to many. Should be some familiar players there… Please call for more info.

Sunday is the day of the 1st Sunday Fiddlers Jam at The Ely Stage Stop on Soda Bay Rd. Bluegrass players and lovers alike make this their once a month destination. Free to the public, (donations accepted) and starts at noon.

In Loch Lomand it’s time for another 1stSunday Open Jam at the Roadhouse from 6 to 10. Come see why musicians from all over the Bay Area and Sacramento have made it over to this jam. Savor the flavors from an excellent menu and a full bar while being part of a “Happening”. Hope to see you there…

Karaoke Korner: Drinx in Lakeport will be hosting Karaoke on Wednesday from 8 to 11:00. The Barn in Clearlake Oaks and Good Time Karaoke, (Billy Kidd) will be handing out the mics on Saturday from 8 to 11:00. On Sunday the Rivierain the Riviarea will be making stars from 5 to 9:00. Tip to all singers - be sure to warm up your vocal cords - mi mi mi mi mi mi mi mi mi mi…

I’d like to once again thank all of you who have been especially supportive of our local musicians and the venues who provide music for their customers. I’m thinking it’s gonna be another great Summer of music here in the county, with outdoor shows starting in a couple months. Presuming I’m not in trouble for the inappropriate bon mot implied at the beginning of this week’s guide, (I apologize… I just got caught up with the spirit of the day, I’ll be at the Kelsey Creek Brewery busking for brewskis today, Tuesday afternoon. Just sayin’…) For now, if and when you go out this weekend to enjoy some live music, have fun – but please be safe…

This Central Valley band plays music that “speaks to fans across the musical spectrum”. ‘nuff said… On Saturday everybody’s favorite band, Decades are back at the Lounge from 9 to 1:00. Their Valentine’s card would read, “2 good 2 be 4 real”…

The Weekly Lake County Music Guide

By ‎Mike Guarniero‎

Is there a word for someone who can’t properly read a calendar? If so, I got it…, (no, not dam braimage…). Some will recognize my mistakes, others hopefully won’t. Anyways… here’s the live music guide for the week of, (fingers crossed…), 1/28 through 2/4.

On Tuesday evening Drinx Bar and Grill in Lakeport, plus Jon Wynacht, (why not?), will host another Open Mic Night. Performers on the Western side of the lake need to check out this event. Jon has got it goin’! It’s also Taco Tuesday, so what’s stoppin’ ya? Starts at 8:00ish… On Thursday you can expect Cowboy Johnson, (no, Mojo, that’s not his porn name…), and his fiddle playing sidekick, Chris Rovetti, to be performing originals and an assortment of Blues, Country – even Reggae. The folks who know ‘em, love ‘em. Why aren’t you yet among those folks?...

The Moose Lodge in Clearlake Oaks will present on Wednesday, (Wimpy Burger Wednesday – the best dang burger in the county…), Pop, Doc and Friends. Pop and Doc, (not to be confused with Papa Doc…) are both DJ’s with KPFZ 88.1 FM, a local independent Lake County Radio Station. They get together once in a blue moon to be on the other side of the turntable, so to speak… Enjoy the featured burger while listening to the featured band from 5 to 7:00. Non- members welcome.

On Thursday, back by popular demand, the Catfish Coffee House in Clearlake and Chris Grant will host another Open Mic Night. Any and all performers are welcome to participate. You’ll find it to be a very laid back atmosphere, and hey, they even offer free coffee. Starts around 7:00. I’ll be there.

The First Friday Fling at the Main Street Galleryin Lakeport will feature excellent art, wines from Steele Wines and music performed by From the Heart. One of the more unique events in Lake County, with not only excellent local art on display and locally produced wines, but always some of the best acoustic music you’ll find in the county. You’ll love From the Heart. Music is from 5:30 to 7:00.

The Smiling Dogs Tasting Room in Kelseyville is happy to bring back The Dorian May Jazz Trio with special guest on Sax, Frances Vanek. And though you might not achieve immortality, (let’s see who gets that…) you will find love in your heart for this combo. Enjoy award winning wines with some excellent Jazz from 6:30 to 9:30.

Keeping the kilt in Kelseyville, The Fore Family Tasting Room on Friday will present international stars, Jim and Susie Malcolmfrom 7:30 to 9:30. Cost for this show will be $22 at the door. Also, on sale will be copies of the duo’s new CD, The Berries. Come check ‘em out!

Shine up your Cowboy Boots for Friday and Saturdaywhen California Country take the stage at Twin Pine Casino in Middletown from 9 to 1:30. This band plays a mix of modern to classic Country music covers, while tossing in an original or three. Get your Two-Steppin’ fix on both nights.

Robinsons Rancheria Lounge from 9 to 1:00 will once again challenge the time-space continuum when they bring back the Time Travellers on Friday night. If genre shifting, dimension jumping and good Classic Rock is your sort of thing, check these guys out. On Saturdaynight there’ll be the much anticipated return of the Kentucky Jugglers. The K’Juggs have been renewing, restoring, revitalizing and recuperating – and now they’re back and ready to RAWK! Let’s all go and let them know how much we’ve missed them from 9 to 1:00.

On Saturday The Soper-Reese Theater will present “A Mid-Winter’s Dance” featuring none other than The Funky Dozen on Saturday from 7 to 1:30. Shake off all those mid-Winter blues at this special event. Cost is $25 to $45, assigned seating. Thank you for supporting the SRT.

On Saturday night, the echoes of that wailing harmonica you’ll hear all over the lake will be Dave Broida and Blues Farmat The Riviera Hills Lounge from 7 to 11:00. This tight, polished Blues band always brings the party to the Riv. Go see what I mean…

The Greenview in Hidden Valley Lake will present Carlos and the Gypsy Pushers on Saturday from 8 to midnight. One could power the entire county off the energy that’s generated when these guys play.

O’Meara Bros Brewing Co in Lakeport usually has some pretty good live music on Saturday but they haven’t posted their February calendar yet. But the O’Bros always have some excellent handcrafted beers and ales, so pop in anyways – can’t lose either way…

The Blue Wing Saloon in Upper Lake will feature for their Sunday Brunch, Jim Williams from 11 to 2:30. For their Sunday $25 Special Supper they will feature The Majide Triofrom 6 to 8:00. For Monday Blues, shuffle the evening away as Stevie and the Shufflenuts shuffle away the evening from 6:30 to 9:00, (say that out loud three times fast!). For TuesdaySupper, Sheridan Malone will be providing the music and melodies from 6 to 8:00. As always, it’s a pretty good idea to make reservations to any and all of these events.

At the Loch Lomand Roadhouse on Sundayevening, come watch the Super Bowl, then get ready for another over-the-top musical display as they present First Sunday Open Jams at the Roadhouse, (the implied acronym on all that requires one of those Star Trek “Universal Translaters” for proper pronunciation…). From 3:00 on it’s going to be 49’er Fever and great musical performances, (along with an occasional wardrobe malfunction…) by the house band and all the guest performers. Music goes on from 6 to 10:00.

Karaoke Korner: This week there’s Karaoke at Drinxin Lakeport on Wednesday starting about 8:30. The Barn in Clearlake Oaks will have Billy Kidd provide the mic, monitor and music on Saturday starting at 8:00. On Sunday, The Riviera Hills Lounge and Grand Slam Karaoke will be making stars from 5 to 9:00. One could make a party out of any of these events…

It’s Super Bowl Sunday and the 49’ers are back where they belong! While there may be some folks who would prefer another team in the game, I have to say, I’m excited! So, if and when you go out this weekend, whether to check out our local bands or to cheer on the 9’ers during the Super Bowl, have a fun time, but please be safe…
