The Weekly Lake County Music Guide

By Mike Guarniero

Happy Independence Day to all. But hold onto your pinwheels and bottle rockets! There’s gonna be lots going on this weekend. And you ain’t gonna be able to change directions without bumping into some live music somewhere. Plus, expect firework events in Clearlake Saturday, LC Fairgrounds Saturday Car Races and Lakeport on the water Sunday. Probably a few more elsewhere - lots of stuff happening! You might want to print this out so you can plan your weekend…

Today, (Tuesday) Howard Dockens is at Running Creek from 5 to 9:00.

On Wednesday, the Blues Invitational Pro Jam featuring Wendy Dewitt, Kirk Harwood, Pierre Archain and Skip Engle will happen at The Hopland Tap from 7 to 10. Each week a special guest musician will be invited to join in – could be you! Musicians as well as lovers of good Blues will certainly enjoy this Jam.

Tony Neves, the man with the golden pipes, will be singing at The Saw Shop Public House in Kelseyville from 6 to 8:00. Enjoy something from their excellent menu, then sit back and let Tony be your muse. Reservations are recommended.

Also in K’ville on Thursday, The Kelseyville Kickin’ in the Country Street Dance is back! This time the featured performers are Andre Thierry and Zydeco Magic. If you enjoy Cajun Blues and Rock, you’re gonna wanna be here kickin’ up your heels! Local downtown merchants stay open for this event for your browsing, shopping, noshing or your imbibing pleasures. Fun for the whole family. “Laissez les Bon temps rouler” from 7 to 10:00.

On Friday evening at The Sports Attic 2 in Ukiah, TC Culp and Friends, (with me sitting in on guitar), will be playing from 5 to 9:00. The Sports Attic is a cool little place with full bar and pub food, and the music is outside on the patio.

The Farmer’s Finest Farmers Market at the Floriculture Bldg in the Lake County Fairgrounds in Lakeport will feature pianint, singer and raconteur, Andy Rossoff. Get a taste of New Orleans while stocking up on fresh locally grown fruit and vegetables, plus an assortment of hand crafted items made by local artisans. All this and more from 10AM to 1:00.

As of this moment I’m not sure who plays the FFFM on Tuesday at the Gazebo of Library Park, Lakeport, but many different produce and crafts vendors will be selling their creations here, so you don’t wanna miss a thing...

Friday, Saturday and Sunday always rocks when Tommy Rox rocks the Park – Richmond Park in the bayside Riviarea - where Nikki’s Birthday Bash will take place Friday evening. T.Rox plays Fri from 6:30 to 9:30, Saturday from 2 to 5:00, Sunday a double header from 2 to 9:00, then again on Monday from 1 to 5:00.

Also on Saturday - Howard Dockens plays from 6 to 10:00.

Then comes Saturday… I have a used Acme Clone-a-matic I’ll sell cheap so you can make all these events…

On Saturday at Brassfield Winery in the hills above Clearlake Oaks, the musical performers will be the Margo Fleming Trio from noon to 3:00. Sample some wines, listen to some Blues, check out the views. It’s all good!

O’Meara Bros Brewing in Lakeport has excellent handcrafted beers and ales, a mouth-watering menu and the outstanding acoustic guitar performances of Austin and Owens on Saturday evening from 6 to 9:00.

Rivino Winery, 4001 Rivino Ranch Rd in Ukiah will feature the Reggae beat and good vibes of Rising Signs on Saturday afternoon from 1 to 4:00. Rivino hosts live music events pretty regularly and Rising Signs is among the best Reggae bands in Nor Cal. Enjoy some wine – then groove!...

The City of Clearlake will start off their new and long-awaited Summer Concert Series with Country Star, (and Nor Cal native) Tyler Rich on Saturday from 6 to 8:00. I get mixed messages on the cost – his flyer shows both free General Admission AND $100 VIP tix, which means everybody can come for free, but there will be exclusive front row seats for those VIP’s willing to pay the dineros. Should be a fireworks extravaganza following the show.

Konocti Vista Casino in Lakeport will continue their Summer Concert Festival on Saturday with the excellent Classic Rock and entertaining stage antics of The Fargo Bros Band from 6 to 10. Music is outside where the lake breezes should cool things down, even as the Fargo Bros heat it all up again. Gonna be a fun time!

The Riviera Hills Lounge in the upper Riviarea will feature impressive views, an excellent menu, and then the Blues, Country Rock and Classic Rock music of the Hip Replacements on Saturday from 5 to 9:00. The humungous canopy keeps it easily 10 degrees cooler that it is in the sun. Reservations are recommended.

On Sunday, it’s that time for the 1st Sunday Fiddlers Jam at the Ely Stage Stop off Soda Bay Rd. Some of the best pickers from all over make this their once a month stop to play some Bluegrass. Come on out and support your local pickers, stomp your feet and kick up some dust from noon until 2:00. Check out the museum displaying some of Lake County’s history while you’re at it.

The Greenview Restaurant in Hidden Valley Lake will feature the musical prowess of guitarist Carlos Garay from 4 to 8:00 outside in view of the greens. Carlos has a lot of energy, I think you’ll like him.

The Boathouse Bar in that nice little town of Nice will have Howard Dockens playing from 6 to 9:00.

The Blue Wing Saloon never fails to provide excellent live music and great food. Here’s their line-up for the weekend…

Karaoke Corner – There’s Karaoke at The Spot in Clearlake on Wednesdays and Drinx in Lakeport on Thursdays. Please call for times

Open Mics – The Middletown Art Center has an Open Mic Friday starting around 8:00.

FYI, my goal is to get folks excited about going out and supporting our local musicians who are playing locally. When describing our local musicians I often insert humor, some well deserved superlatives, harmless snark, personal opinions, teasing, (sorry Mojo…), and silly nicknames that, unless I find out how much they’re disapproved of, I tend to re-use. Nothing I do is mean-spirited. I show as much support to our musicians and the venues who hire them as I deem necessary to encourage interest from you. The music guide is meant to be informative as well as entertaining. So, if I have offended anyone with something I have written, please PM me about it. I need to apologize. ‘Nuff said on that…

It's gonna be another scorcher this coming weekend, so dress light, wear a hat, stay hydrated, and have a fun time. And please stay safe…

The Weekly Lake County Music Guide

By Mike Guarniero

For the last 18 years I’ve had all my automotive needs performed by one shop, the Lake Lube Express in Clearlake. Even repairs I could do myself I’d take to them because the cost was so low, it made perfect sense to have a pro do it. A couple of weeks ago the shop closed down, the owner deciding it was high time he retired. I’d like to wish the best to Mike Greenwood in his retirement years. He saved me a lot of money over the years. Thank you, Sir!

Back in the day I used to do all my own mechanical stuff but grew tired of afterwards having to take it all apart and correct my mistakes. I learned a lot – mostly that I wasn’t cut out for mechanics. Especially when the new style of cars with all the cowling and certain high tech features came on the market, I then ONLY took it in to the shop. Let the experts do it. RIGHT!?!

Of course, that means I’m gonna hafta do a lotta repairs myself now, starting off with a brake pad and rotor replacement which I plan to attempt right after I post this week’s live music guide. For the next week or so, please be on the lookout for a white Toyota Tacoma with matching shell - and steer clear of it just in case...

But, of course, the music guide takes priority, so here’s the live music lineup for the week of 5/26 through 6/2…

On Wednesday the Smiling Dogs Ranch at 6675 Kelsey Creek Dr in K’ville opens this years “Humpday Howler” Concert Series with Sonoma County bluesters, Johnny Tsunami and the Hurricanes. The ranch needs no electrical power for this event - this band generates enough energy to power the entire county. High Energy Blues and Rock! Yessir! Music goes on from 5:30 to 8:30 and there is a cover charge, maybe $10. Bring chairs, a picnic and drinks, (unbreakable containers, please), maybe even some snacks to share with the others. SDR Wines will be sold by the bottle or the glass. Come prepared to dance!

The Hip Replacements, (still love that name…), will be playing Thursday outside at The Saw Shop Public House In Kelseyville from 6 to 8:00. Check out their website and especially their daily menus. Great food, good music. Reservations are strongly suggested.

It’s another T.Rox weekend, this time with a side of Fargo at The Park in the Bayside Riviarea, (Richmond Park for those new to The LC). Tommy Rox plays Friday from 6 to 9:00 and Saturday/Sunday from 2 to 5:00. Try to stump this guy – he knows almost all your favorite songs. Speaking of all your favorite songs, after Tommy concludes his set at 5:00, Sunday, either stick around or else come on out to experience the Rockin’ insanity that only The Fargo Bros can provide. They’re not just another pretty face, they’re also the best dang rockers in Lake County. Showtime is 5:30 to 9:30. Plenty of boat slips if you’re out on the lake…

The Blue Wing Saloon in Upper Lake has a weekend of live musical events starting with the delightful Majide Trio on Friday evening from 6 to 8.

On Saturday evening expect the uber talented David Neft to be both tinkling AND tickling the ivories, (inside joke – fagitaboutit…;) from 6 to 8:00.

For their Sunday Brunch enjoy an excellent fare while listening to the music of “From The Heart” from 11 to 2:00.

David Neft will be back again by popular demand playing piano for the Sunday Supper from 6 to 8:00. He’s that good!

And for Monday Bluzeday, Clean Sweep will be back after a long pause to perform some great Blues and R&B for ya from 6 to 8:00.

As always, it’s a good idea to make reservations for any and all of these dining events.

On Saturday morning at the Farmer’s Finest Farmers Market, along with a selection of locally grown fruit and veggies, hand made crafts, jewelry, tie dye attire and a host of other must have items, come enjoy some of the Cajun/New Orleans style favorites and other Classic piano tunes from our very own Andy Rossoff. The event is from 10AM to 1:00.

On Tuesday the FFFM moves over to Library Park in Lakeport – right on the shoreline, where you’ll find many different produce and crafts vendors setting up shop, while another performer plays tunes. Up on the gazebo you’ll find Margo Fleming playing some Blues and other songs on guitar. I can guarantee she’ll make your shopping experience more enjoyable. Also 10 to 1:00.

Please come support your local produce growers and craftspeople.

O’Meara Bros Brewing in Lakeport is happy to present Carlos Garay on Saturday evening from 6 to 9:00. Enjoy a great meal, some excellent hand crafted beers and ales plus the music of Carlos and you’re evening is complete.

On Saturday evening The Riviera Hills Lounge in the Riviarea will feature the return of Dr Groove, (my band…), from 5 to 9:00. Enjoy a great view, a couple libations, nosh, and then groove to some Rock, Blues, R&B, Soul and Funk from the Doctor, (and we will introduce our newest band member…). Please make reservations early, there’s limited seating outside, (but more inside…).

Robinsons Rancheria Casino Lounge in that nice town of Nice, local favorite John Paul Hodge makes his 2021 appearance in this Lake County venue. Music goes from 9 to 1:00. Pull a few handles or play a few hands at Blackjack – it’s your lucky night when JPH is playing.

On Sunday come on out to Lower Lake where the Lower Lake Daze Parade and Street Fair is taking place. Get there early for the best parking spots – bring chairs and refreshments for the parade, then enjoy some of the food prepared by local eateries as well as a myriad of crafts and such. Local band The Time Travelers will enter our dimension in time to play some Classic Rock from 12 to 3:00.

Folks, because information about live music events is so limited, I can only hope I get everything correct. Please be gentle and let me know if I missed something. It might be time to break out the tanning butter, Hawaiian shirts and wide brim hats, it’s promising to be a nice warm weekend. Please remember, the Covid rules still apply – wear masks and practice social distancing at each of these events. The life you save could be your own… So, if you go out and enjoy what Lake County has to offer this weekend, (including live music), have a fun time, but please be safe… PEACE/OUT!

Lake County Music Guide

By Mike Guarniero

Okay, for those who are interested let me explain my process; As I scroll through Facebook I find out about a particular live music event from a post where someone tells us of about band, a party, a solo artist – everything from a drum circle to a big concert – all courtesy of a friend, relative or neighbor who just wants folks to know about this live music event that’s gonna be happening. I write all this information down onto a template that I created for the LCMG, then I surf to the LC Chamber of Commerce Events Calendar and other websites from our local venues that feature live music, also adding all that info onto the template. Then I make calls to the other venues where live music is featured. Once I’ve checked every nook and cranny where live music info, rumors and even sometimes lies can be found, every Tuesday I create this week’s live music guide. Total time to compile info for the guide, and then write up a reasonably entertaining music listing, and then finally post it onto a few LC music related FB pages: 3 to 5 hours.

Without fail, immediately after posting I get responses from folks letting me know I forgot something.

No, no, no! I didn’t forget anything - I just didn’t know about it. Look up “fallible” in the dictionary and you’ll find a picture of me alongside the definition.

My point is this; many solo musicians, bands and venues don’t do much in the way of self promotion, so I rely on whatever info is available. Get it?

Anyways, here’s some good news, (let’s hear a real loud “WOOHOO”!)... Three more venues will be added to the music guide, (I call them venues because they provide live music, but their businesses may be totally unrelated to each other.) The Spot in Clearlake has finally reopened and live music has slipped by without even your humble blogger knowing about it. O’Meara Bros Brewing Co in Lakeport had their first live music event last weekend, and it’s looking like it’s back to being a regular thing. And finally, the Smiling Dogs Ranch concert events, cleverly called the “Humpday Howlers”, will be starting up again beginning next week. I’m stoked – live music lovers should be as well. So without further ado, (and the cessation of further whining…), here’s the live music guide for the week of 5/20 through 5/26…

The Saw Shop Public House in K’ville is excited to bring back, (after a year’s delay), The Lake County Diamonds. This fun band is the perfect compliment to an excellent menu. Music is from 6 to 8:00. Reservations are strongly recommended.

All weekend T.Rox will be rockin’ the Park. That’s Tommy Rox playin’ guitar and singin’ at Richmond Park in the Riviarea, in case you need further clarification. Friday from 6:30 to 9:30, Sat and Sun, 2 until 5:00. It’s an afternoon party every weekend at The Park! And there’s plenty of boat slips if you’re out on the lake – just sayin’.

The Farmer’s Finest Farmers Market on Saturday features Reikor and Saro Deacon from 10 to 1:00. Stock up on locally grown fruits, veggies and hand crafted wares, then stick around and enjoy some good music in the Floraculture bldg. at the Lake County Fairgrounds.

On Tuesday the FFFM moves to Library Park in Lakeport, also from 10 to 1:00, and featuring the Blues and other music from Margo Fleming. This newcomer on the local live music scene is really making a name for herself. Check her out as you check out the locally grown produce and crafts on display.

Thank you for supporting your local farmers and craftspeople…

The Blue Wing Saloon in Upper Lake, a place that always seems to have something live music wise going on, will not disappoint this weekend.

On Friday evening The Majide Trio will be performing from a repertoire of Classics, Standards, Torch Blues and other delightful tunes from a very special era of music from 6 to 8:00.

On Saturday evening David Neft is back tinkling the ivories from 6 to 8:00. Who doesn’t love David Neft?

For their Sunday Brunch expect the TC Trio, (TC Culp and Friends), to be performing Blues and other songs for your brunch dining pleasure from 11 to 1:00. It’s TC’s birthday, so Sunny Cordell and I will be sittin’ in along with some other friends, so come say hi, have a great breakfast and enjoy some tunes.

Sunday Supper will feature the strummin’ and singin’ of Hillarie Witt from 6 to 8:00.

Monday Blues will feature the 1,4,5 of the Hip Replacements – great name, great Blues.

Reservations are recommended for any or all of these events.

O’Meara Bros Brewing Co in Lakeport is happy to present Tony Neves, “THE VOICE OF LAKE COUNTY”. Tony is the lead singer of The Funky Dozen and has been wowing folks in The LC for more than a dozen years. Welcome OMBBC back to our live music lineup, enjoy a good meal and show some love for Tony. 6 to 9:00, Dudes.

On Saturday afternoon the Cobb Mtn community and Pancho, (Paul Greenley) will present a live music benefit for the “75th Anniversary For The Pool” featuring local musicians Robert Start plus John and Lia Findley Jennings, and maybe somebody else you might know and love. This benefit is to support the pool, but also to spread good cheer amongst the mountain folks, (as well as some flatlanders…). No cover, but donations are greatly appreciated. Step on up to the mountain and enjoy some music. I believe it’s from 6 to 9:00 PM.

If a rockin’ good DJ is your thing, come on out to The Riviera Hills Lounge in the Riviarea for the groove thang tunes of DJ Funkenstein, 6 to 10:00. Enjoy a meal, a great view and dance the evening away.

On Wednesday from 5:30 to 8:30, (5/26), the Smiling Dogs Ranch Humpday Howler starts off like a long awaited double disaster when Johnny Tsunami and the Hurricanes rock the pool with some high energy Blues and Rock music. This Sonoma County band has rocked the North Bay for more than a decade or two or three, (but who’s counting?), and the SDR’s gonna start off their summer concert series with a BIG BANG! Locally produced wines by the glass and bottle will be available during this event. Don’t quote me, but I believe there’s a cover charge ($10+ or -), and please bring a lawn chair and maybe a snack for others to share.

Like I’ve been saying, “baby steps”. Little by little the local music scene is coming back to life, just as we all will. Please remember that the Mask and social distancing rules are still in place, so do your part in complying with these rules until the Covid situation is finally over. So, if and when you come out this weekend to enjoy live music, have fun… but please be safe.

But first, there's some music happening this week, so pay attention...

Today's the first day of Autumn. And where did the Summer go? I'll summarize, (no pun intended...) my thoughts with a song that most certainly encapsulates everything that went wrong between June 20th and September 22nd…

On SaturdayThe Greenview in Hidden Valley Lake will have Karaoke starting at 8:00. On Sunday The Riviera Hills Lounge will provide Karaokefrom 5 to 9.

SOAPBOX ALERT! I consider myself to be somewhat of an ambassador for live music here in Lake County. I play music, I observe musicians and bands and I always try to promote both them and the venues that provide that live music. I’ll even promote the bands and venues I don’t particularly like, because that’s what’s best for our overall music scene. But as an “ambassador” I take personal umbrage when certain individuals decide to lead some crusade against a particular venue, or the owner, or the manager. These petty grievances only serve to hurt a local live music scene that’s fragile enough without these misguided efforts exacerbating the by-products of their complaints. Those of us who enjoy the benefits of our healthy music scene should also be ambassadors, promoting - not deriding. ‘Nuff said about that… So, if and when you go out this weekend to support our local music scene, have fun – but please be safe.

Oh yeah, don’t forget to get out and vote on Tuesday…

The Weekly Lake County Music Guide

By Mike Guarniero

Today is Fat Tuesday, or as it is known in different countries, Pancake Day, Paczki Day, Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras, and finally, the Tuesday of Carnival – all of which are 47 days before Easter Sunday. The religious connection has you eating up all meats plus any other foods that comes from animals, like eggs and cream, along with certain libations restricted during the Lenten Season that commences the following day, Ash Wednesday. Of course, Fat Tuesday has since evolved, (some would prefer “de-evolved…), into a month of hedonism and debauchery, (or just about any other inappropriate behavior), to end at the stroke of midnight of said Tuesday. I tend to go along with the latter, I mean, rich pastries and fatty meats can be over-rated – so just give me a Hurricane and then show us your, um… well, you get the point… Meanwhile, back in The LC there’s gonna be all kinds of live music to cleanse our souls. Here’s the live music guide for the week of 2/25 through 3/3…

Tuesday at the Blue Wing Saloon in Upper Lake there’s going to be a special Mardi Gras Supper featuring the music of David Neft from 6 to 8:00. Beads and ceramic costume masks are optional. Reservations are strongly recommended...

The Moose Lodge in Clearlake Oaks on Wednesdaywill feature the music of 20 Feet of Shade

from 5 to 7:00. It’s also Wimpy Burger Wednesday. While I rave about these burgers, many of my friends have become converts. Wimpy Burgers and Shade, and it’s just Wednesday…

Thursday at the Catfish Coffee House in Clearlake, Chris Grant will be hosting another Open Mic event starting at 7:00. This is a comfortable atmosphere with free coffee, (not made from catfishes…) appreciative audiences and all musicians are invited.

The D-Bag, (Drinx in Lakeport) will have another “Folk Y’all” event on Thursday featuring none other than Cowboy Johnson and Chris Rovetti. Man, can these boys play! Go check ‘em out for yourselves from 8 to 10:00.

The Smiling Dogs Tasting Room in Kelseyville on Fridayare happy to bring back acoustic guitar savants Austin and Owens from 6:30 to 9:30. Contrary to popular beliefs, I don’t have a “man crush” on these guys, I’m just totally in awe of what they can do on guitar. Enjoy some award winning wines, then experience the greatness… On Saturday afternoon Rural Jazz Conspiracy will be showing the masses why Jazz isn’t just for wine snobs and wussies from 2 to 5:00. Come on out and join in the conspiracy. It’ll set you free…

This might be a typo because O’Meara Bros Brewing Cousually has music on Saturday, but they have The Brannigans listed for Friday. Solution: go both nights and enjoy lots of the O’Bros fine handcrafted beers and ales, (I like the Blond…).

On Friday night The Kentucky Jugglers will be tearing it up at The Pub in Ukiah from 9 to midnight. Still one of my favorite Lake County bands, it’s always a party in the making when the K’Juggs take the stage.

I’d like to once again thank all of you who have been especially supportive of our local musicians and the venues who provide music for their customers. I’m thinking it’s gonna be another great Summer of music here in the county, with outdoor shows starting in a couple months. Presuming I’m not in trouble for the inappropriate bon mot implied at the beginning of this week’s guide, (I apologize… I just got caught up with the spirit of the day, I’ll be at the Kelsey Creek Brewery busking for brewskis today, Tuesday afternoon. Just sayin’…) For now, if and when you go out this weekend to enjoy some live music, have fun – but please be safe…
